🎙️ 📹 From Groupon, to Audio Guides to... Descript!
In 2008 with $1 million seed money in hand, our protagonist set out to build Groupon which was valued at over $1 billion after just 16 months in business, the fastest company ever to reach this milestone. He was known for being more honest and blunt than other tech CEOs. Four and a half years later, he was ousted from Groupon.
But this wasn't his speed breaker. In 2013, he co-founded Detour with an intention to enhance the real-world experience. Detour was an audio tool that created high-quality audio-based walking tours of cities around the world. Descript was born within Detour as an audio production tool for the internal team to record and edit audio easily - since the audio tools available then were mostly focused on music production and they had a high learning curve.
When he noticed that Detour wasn't doing well, they decided to pivot around this audio production tool and invest in it full-time. Descript was officially launched in 2017 with a $5M seed investment from Andreesen Horowitz.
In this story, we are talking about Andrew Mason and his vision to "edit audio and video like you edit text"! 😎
🗞️ Community Reads
Facebook is working on a new AI project (Ego4D) where it is researching AI systems that see, hear and remember everything you do.
“The project has the chance to really catalyse work in this field in a way that hasn’t really been possible yet,” says Facebook AI research scientist Kristen Grauman. “To move our field from the ability to analyse piles of photos and videos that were human-taken with a very special purpose, to this fluid, ongoing first-person visual stream that AR systems, robots, need to understand in the context of ongoing activity.”

In this blog, Richard Millington lists and explains the factors that influence community engagement👇
Here are 5 factors he defines, which drive engagement in a community:
Potential Audience - There are only so many members who can be a part of your community (your TG). This is defined by the content or values your community drives and if it leads a member towards their aspiration or goal.
Interested Visitors - You can build this pipeline by promoting your community through various marketing channels, word of mouth marketing by driving great content and to some extent also depends on your competition.
Community Experience - This defines how well do you manage and engage your community, how do you push relevant content and member onboarding experience.
Rate of Churn - The best way to prevent churn is to understand member aspirations and ensure your content and engagement are aligned with those.
Long term inactive members - Figure out what made these members inactive - unresponsive queries, moved to other communities for better value, etc - prevent these instances to avoid further inactivity.
Discord can arguably have a high learning curve for some community managers. David Spinks helps break this down by giving high-value tips for effective member onboarding 👇
